Plumbing Tips
We’ve prepared a series of simple and effective preventative tips you can implement today. Learn how to identify early warning signs, perform basic maintenance to extend the life of your pipes, and avoid common mistakes that lead to costly repairs.
Basic Maintenance Tips
-
Know where your main shut-off valve is – In an emergency (like a burst pipe), turning off the water quickly can prevent major damage. It’s usually near the water meter
- Check for leaks regularly – Look under sinks, around toilets, and behind appliances. Even small leaks can waste water and lead to mold or damage over time.
- Use strainers in drains – Catch hair, food scraps, and debris before they clog your pipes.
- Don’t use the toilet like a trash can – Only flush toilet paper. No wipes (even “flushable”), paper towels, or hygiene products.
- Keep an eye on your water pressure – High pressure (over 80 psi) can damage pipes and fixtures. Install a pressure regulator if needed.
Clog Prevention Tips
- Avoid pouring grease down the drain – It solidifies and causes major blockages. Pour it into a container and trash it.
- Run hot water after using the sink – This helps flush out oils and soap scum in the pipes.
- Clean your showerhead – Remove mineral buildup by soaking it in vinegar overnight.
Appliance-Specific Tips
- Flush your water heater once a year – This removes sediment and improves efficiency/longevity.
- Check washing machine hoses – Replace rubber hoses every 5 years or switch to braided stainless steel to reduce burst risk.
- Install shut-offs on fixtures – Makes it easier to repair or replace a toilet, sink, or washing machine without shutting down the whole house.
Emergency Preparedness
- Keep a plunger, adjustable wrench, and pipe tape in your home toolkit.
- Learn how to turn off individual fixtures (toilets, sinks).
- Don’t ignore gurgling drains or slow flow—they’re early signs of a clog or venting issue.
